Hi I'm Reeta Beeta all grown up. Here to let you know…it does get better.
Sickle cell research and treatments are finally growing and I personally use bloodless medicine's preventative measures to get in front of my crisis.
As a sickle beta thalassemia zero warrior I have heard all the warnings of refusing blood transfusions. Our treatment options unclear, yet were led by instilling fear, not hope. According to those doctors, I was supposed to die at 5, then 11, then 20, then not going to see 30, then 40, and as they continue to move the goal post as if we have a fixed expiration date I had to learn to disappear that noise. No warrior, no parent, no caregiver should have to face this illness with uncertainty and overwhelming fear.
Living Well With Sickle Cell is more than surviving…it takes faith and confidence in the one who designed our bodies to teach us how to thrive. We can treat serious illnesses without a dependency on blood products however we need more than transfusion avoidance…we need proven strategies.
Building health literacy now before the crisis, speaking to medical professionals who want to help, helps us face each trial with calm confidence.
